CARRIERES-SOUS-POISSY, QUARTIER DES FLEURS : 860 DWELLINGS
EFIDIS

1994

Initial context

before demolition

-42 building blocks, all similar but fairly scattered in a large green open space devoted to pedestrians, free from any car park.
-At each level, windows ran horizontally along every facade of each block, restraining the furnishing possibilities in the rooms. (Most tenants slipped pieces of cardboard or plywood behind their windows in order to reduce the glass surface.)

Our aims

-To transform this large housing estate into a residential " garden city ".
-To divide the housing plan into smaller housing units with specific architectural treatments in order to break the uniformity and to create the idea of a neighborhood. -To give opacity to the facades making the furnishing possibilities easier in every dwelling.

Project

Four architectural treatments are designed to define smaller residential housing units :
-The opacity is given by prefabricated panels of fiber glass and cement covered with different skin materials such as bricks, tiles and stones. These different skin materials are employed to give an architectural identity to the new housing units.
-A modern aluminum cornice crowns the building and redefines its silhouette.
-Balconies in prefabricated white concrete are built in front of the buildings bordering the main street at the entrance of the district.
